Denham House
Marlborough
The Denham house was an interesting project was located on a difficult site that presented quite a few challenges. The average slope was 37 degrees, posing some engineering challenges, handled superbly by the in-house engineering team at Smart Associates.
The house was therefore limited in plan depthwise but was designed to have longer thinner areas – stacked on five levels – maximising the magnificent views to the Marlborough Sounds.
The top level incorporated a tower accommodating a spa bath with breathtaking 270 degree views, accessed by a circular stair.
An innovative system of shading was used with windsurfer type sails mounted on running rails – allowing the sails to be moved as required. These sails, when seen from the incoming Interisland Ferries, appear to hang in the air, and are a reflection of the windsurfing activity often seen in the bay.
Ultimately awarded the Master Builder’s Supreme House of the year (regional winner).
